The Laconia Council has unanimously approved a study to determine the economic value of the current rail line for rail use vs. repurposing the existing rail line for the WOW trail. 

The existing rail line is used by the Hobo and Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and for freight transport by the New England Southern Railroad and Granite State Railroad

Removing the tracks would cut the NH railway in half stranding the northern section, displacing 3 rail lines and cost numerous jobs and income.

There have been stepped up patrols due to reports of tent cities and drug use on the Winnisquam portion of the trail and an arrest on the WOW trail:
